About the Program
The Chelan-Douglas Community Action Council receives funds to weatherize homes in Chelan and Douglas counties, for homeowners or renters, houses or mobile homes. The weatherization program is primarily a low income assistance program which helps households improve their quality of life by giving them a more healthful home environment, educating them on safety and health concerns, showing them how they can get more for their energy dollar so that they can use more of their household budget to provide for their basic health needs including the purchase of nutritious food and professional health services as well as the ability to pay for prescribed medications, etc., and how, after weatherization, they can be better positioned to pay their rent preventing eviction, and how we can keep them in their existing home longer by making it more affordable and by taking care of some of the maintenance issues before they threaten the structure and last but not least, how they can save energy. While saving energy is the primary goal, we cannot discount all other work completed and program benefits that accrue to those we serve. As mentioned before, the weatherization package usually includes insulating the attic, walls, floors and water heater pipes, weather stripping doors, replacing broken window panes, air sealing, duct sealing, providing CFL bulbs, CO detectors, smoke detectors, thermostats, low flow shower heads/faucets and possible base load improvements. Most insulated houses show a savings of about 30% on their utility bills. |

Energy conservation tips
50% - Only 10 percent of the energy used by an incandescent bulb produces light; the rest is given off as heat. If you replace 25 percent of your light bulbs with fluorescent, you can save 50 percent on your lighting bill. 42% - Typically, 42 percent of an average family's energy bills are spent to keep homes at a comfortable temperature. Heat pours out of homes through drafty doors and windows, and through ceilings and walls that aren't insulated. 10% - You can save 10 percent or more on your energy bill by stopping the air leaks in your home. |
